Del Piero to dedicate final to father

Juventus superstar Alessandro Del Piero says he will dedicate Wednesday night's Champions League final to his biggest inspiration – his late father.

Gino Del Piero sadly passed away 13 months ago and the Italian forward admits he never fully appreciated how much his father had done for his career until he had gone.

The 28-year-old will take part in an unprecedented all-Italian European Cup final when his Turin side face Milan at Old Trafford and the hot-shot forward believes father Gino will be by his side when he steps out on to the Theatre of Dreams.

"My father was such an important person to me and for our whole family," declared Del Piero.

"I know he will be with me and I will be thinking of him.

"Since his death everyone in our family feels we should do more, try harder, while thinking of him.

"Before he died I was going through a rough patch. I had struggled with injuries and had not recovered my best form. I was not even in good shape.

"But since his death, I don't know what it is, but something has happened.

"It is strange but it is almost as if he has helped me through his death, he has pushed me on."

Del Piero has made himself the darling of the Stadio Delle Alpi faithful after helping the Old Lady of Italian football to another scudetto this term, his fifth in ten years since joining from Padova and hopes to add to the Champions League medal he picked up in 1996 against Ajax as a 21-year-old, having failed in the next two finals.
