England recieve boost

Steven Gerrard and Paul Scholes provided England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson with cause for encouragement by taking part in training on Sunday.

The midfield pair came through unscathed from a training session at the squad's La Manga camp in Spain as they build up to the Euro 2004 qualifier against Slovakia on 11 June.

Scholes suffered a knee injury in the 2-1 friendly win in South Africa on Thursday while Gerrard rarely trains immediately after playing a match.

Striker Wayne Rooney has a knee injury and he was being kept a close eye on by physio Gary Lewin who is also monitoring the progress of defender John Terry's thigh problem.

England will play a friendly against Serbia & Montenegro on 3 June prior to the Euro 2004 qualifier but could be without Rio Ferdinand for one or even both of the games.

Manchester United centre-back Ferdinand came off at half-time with a knee injury against South Africa and he could only carry out work in the gym on Sunday.

"Rio Ferdinand remained in the gym where he continued with his rehabilitation on his knee injury," confirmed FA spokesman Adrian Bevington.

"He is being closely monitored and we are continuing to maintain contact with Manchester United."

Ferdinand's fitness is a major concern as Eriksson has problems in central defence with Sol Campbell, Jonathan Woodgate and Wes Brown out for the summer programme through injury.

Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher is expected to train on Monday after linking up with the rest of the England players while midfielder Owen Hargreaves does not join up until after next weekend's German Cup final.

The England players are expected to undergo daily sessions of up to two hours each morning during their week's stay, while being given free time with their families each afternoon.
