Ferdinand out of England team
Rio Ferdinand is out of England's friendly with Serbia
and Montenegro on Tuesday and the Euro 2004 qualifier with Slovakia on 11
June.
The Manchester United defender has been troubled by a knee injury for the
last couple of months and aggravated the problem during England's 2-1 win
over South Africa in Durban last week.
But there was better news for England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson when
Everton's medical staff passed Wayne Rooney fit to play.
After an examination by the United medical team in Manchester on Friday it
was decided that Ferdinand will undergo surgery, ruling him out for the rest
of the season.
Eriksson said: "We are very disappointed to lose Rio Ferdinand but this is
obviously the right decision for medical reasons.
"I would like to emphasise the excellent co-operation between Manchester
United and ourselves over this issue."
Ferdinand joins Sol Campbell, Wes Brown and Jonathan Woodgate on the
sidelines, but Eriksson said he will not be calling anyone into his squad as
a replacement.
Rooney, who missed last week's win in South Africa because of the injury,
returned to Everton's Bellefield training ground on Friday to undergo
further tests.
He had been struggling with a knee ligament injury since the Toffees' last
game of the season against Manchester United.
But Everton head physio Mick Rathbone told the Everton website: "We have
checked Wayne out today.
"He has trained in the past few days and reported no reaction so he will
join up with the squad on Sunday." |
