Knox: Gattuso is ideal

Former Manchester United assistant manager Archie Knox reckons Gennaro Gattuso would be a big hit if he moved to Old Trafford.

The Italian midfielder, who picked up a Champions League winner's medal at United's stadium on Wednesday night when AC Milan beat Juventus on penalties, has been linked with the Premiership champions, who had been knocked out at the quarter-final stage by Real Madrid.

Knox knows Gattuso well from the time he was Walter Smith's assistant at Rangers, a spell which saw the player recruited when he was a young unknown.

He said: "I thought he was the man of the match without a shadow of a doubt. They gave it to (Paolo) Maldini, who was excellent as well of course, but I'm delighted to see him doing well because he certainly had the talent when he was here at Rangers to go on to be a big player.

"He's certainly proved that. He has come a long way in a short time.

"As a boy he had such enthusiasm for the game, the club he was playing for and the support. He was a big favourite with the Rangers supporters. I think they would have been sad to see him go."

Smith's successor Dick Advocaat clearly did not rate him as highly and quickly sold him on.

But now Gattuso, nicknamed 'Rino', is an Italian international and Sir Alex Ferguson, who Knox assisted at Aberdeen and Manchester United, is reported to be interested in recruiting him.

Knox added: "I'm sure he would augment their squad. He has that level of ability to play at a club like Manchester United and he has the temperament to go along with it.

"Clubs that size need to know players can handle playing on a stage like Old Trafford because there have been one or two even in my time there that didn't handle it too well."
