Spurs
deny Kanoute link
Tottenham have denied speculation that they are close
to signing West Ham striker Freddie Kanoute.
The player's agent, Willie McKay, had earlier confirmed that the London
clubs had held negotiations about a potential £4m deal for the Frenchman.
Spurs admitted that they are interested in the 25-year-old but said that
Kanoute would not be joining White Hart Lane in the near future.
"Media claims that we are set to sign Frederic Kanoute are wide of the
mark," a statement on the club's official website said.
"The West Ham striker is another player who we admire but we are not on the
verge of any transfer.
"As with Bobby Zamora, Kanoute is one of a number of players that we are
looking at but, once again, if we make an offer, we will do so directly to
his club."
McKay revealed that Kanoute would be interested in a switch to White Hart
Lane following West Ham's relegation to Division One.
"Freddie is very keen to go to Tottenham because he feels it would be a
great move for him," McKay told BBC Sport.
"He's been to America and has now had his injury problems sorted out.
"There has been interest from other Premiership clubs, but Freddie believes
Tottenham are best suited to him and he thinks he could strike up a good
partnership with Robbie Keane.
"Freddie obviously wants to play in the Premiership and Glenn Hoddle has
told the Spurs chairman, Daniel Levy, that Freddie is the player he wants.
"At the moment it's a question of price and it's down to the two clubs to
agree on one, but I think it will be in the region of £4m."
West Ham are known to be ready to cash in on some of their top earners in an
attempt to offset the cost of dropping out of the Premiership.
But they want to keep hold of Joe Cole, Michael Carrick and Jermain Defoe,
who have been targeted by other top-flight clubs, for their Division One
promotion push. |
